Location is approximate. It comes from IP address databases, not GPS, and typically points to your provider’s nearest hub, so the city can be off by tens of kilometres. We can find your region, not your street. We’re curious, not creepy.

What it means

Your public IP address is the number every website, game server and app sees when your device connects to it. Your internet provider assigns it, and at home it is normally shared by every device behind your router. It is not the same as the private address in your computer’s network settings (for example 192.168.1.23), which only exists inside your local network.

There are two versions. IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 and have run out worldwide, so providers increasingly share one IPv4 address between many customers. There are about 4.3 billion of them, which seemed like plenty in 1981.IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::42 and are plentiful enough to give every device its own. Many connections have both; the connectivity panel above tells you which of the two you have.

The ASN (autonomous system number) identifies the network that owns your address, usually your ISP, mobile carrier, hosting company or VPN provider. If the organisation shown is not the company you pay for internet, you are probably connected through a VPN, proxy, or a workplace or school network.

How it works

When you open this page, our server on Cloudflare’s edge network reads the address your request came from and writes it straight into the HTML, so it appears before any JavaScript runs. Country, region, city, time zone and network owner come from the IP data Cloudflare attaches to every request. We do not call any third-party lookup service.

Your hero is picked from the same data: the network block of your IP, your provider, device and browser. The card edition (Standard, Holo, Gold, Midnight…) depends on when you visit. The card is drawn on our server and contains no IP address, so you can share it freely.

Prefer the terminal? curl myiphero.com prints just your IP, andcurl myiphero.com/json returns the details above as JSON. No hero, though. Heroes don’t do terminals.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IP address shown here really mine?

It is the public address your traffic leaves the internet with. At home that address usually belongs to your router and is shared by every phone, laptop and TV on the network, so all of them show the same IP here. Your smart fridge included. On mobile data or behind a VPN, it belongs to your carrier or the VPN server instead.

Why is the location wrong or in a different city?

IP geolocation is approximate. It is based on where your provider registered or routes its address blocks, not on GPS. The country is usually correct, but the city is often the nearest large hub of your provider, sometimes 50–100 km away. A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or a corporate network will show their own location.

How is my hero picked?

From your connection, not at random. The network block your IP address belongs to, your internet provider, your device and your browser are hashed into one number, and that number picks the hero. Same network, device and browser, same hero, every visit. Common heroes come up more often than rare ones, and a few traits tip the odds: IPv6, Linux, a phone. A VPN turns everyone into Mr. Proxy and Tor into Whisper.

Why does my card look different from yesterday?

Your hero never changes. Its card edition does: the time of day, the date and a daily roll decide whether it is Standard, Holo, Gold, Midnight or something rarer. Refreshing the page does not help. The roll happens once a day, at midnight your time. The heroes guide lists every edition and how to catch it.

Where do the hero stats come from?

Each hero has base stats. Your connection then adds or removes points: IPv6 and Linux add brains, a fast round-trip to our server adds speed, a VPN adds stealth, every 7 in your IP address adds luck. The scan report next to your card lists every bonus.

Is my IP address on the hero card or in the share link?

No. The card and the link contain only the hero, five stats, an item, a made-up EXP number, your country and the card edition. Nothing in them can be turned back into your IP address, and we do not store anything.

What is the difference between a public and a private IP address?

A private address such as 192.168.1.23 or 10.0.0.5 only works inside your local network and is assigned by your router. The public address on this page is what the rest of the internet sees. Your router translates between the two (NAT), which is why your computer’s network settings show a different number.

Why does my IP address (and my hero) keep changing?

Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic address from the provider’s pool, which can change when the router restarts, when a lease expires or when you switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. IPv6 devices also rotate temporary “privacy” addresses every day or so. A new network block can also mean a new hero.

How do I hide or change my IP address?

A VPN or the Tor Browser routes your traffic through another server, so websites see that server’s IP instead. Restarting your router may get you a new dynamic address from your provider, and switching to mobile data always uses a different one. Reload this page afterwards to check what websites see now. Sunglasses and a hoodie, sadly, change nothing.

Do you store or log my IP address?

No. The address is read from the request, put into the page and forgotten, and responses are marked as non-cacheable. We set no cookies of our own. The ads on the site come from Google AdSense, which may use cookies (in the EU only with your consent). Details are in the privacy policy.

Who are the heroes?

Twelve pixel-art characters we drew ourselves, pixel by pixel, which took longer than we’d like to admit. Each stands for a kind of connection: Mr. Proxy shows up behind VPNs and data centres, Whisper behind Tor, and the other ten are shared out by network, device and browser. All twelve, with how rare each one is, are in the heroes guide.
